Inside Dyad: Interning with Zilke Steenkamp

This winter, we had the pleasure of welcoming Zilke, a fashion student from Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion, into the Dyad studio for a one-week internship. Thoughtful, curious, and quietly confident, Zilke brought fresh energy and a deep appreciation for sustainable, story-led design.

In this short Q&A, we chat to her about her time at Dyad, what draws her to fashion, and where she sees the industry heading in the years to come. From craftsmanship to creativity, her perspective is rooted in purpose—something we value deeply.

We’re so happy to share a glimpse into her world.

What inspired you to intern at Dyad, and how would you describe your experience working in the studio?

I was really drawn to Dyad because I saw they could provide a great opportunity to gain valuable skills and industry knowledge. I tend to thrive in smaller teams, and Dyad’s studio environment seemed like the perfect fit for me. I was eager to get hands-on experience in a creative and dynamic space. Working in the studio has been an enriching and enjoyable experience. The atmosphere was welcoming; I found it easy to stay motivated and engaged.

Where are you currently studying fashion, and what drew you to that path?

I’m currently studying fashion at Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion. I’ve always been fascinated by how fashion can provide identity, tell a story and influence how people feel about themselves.

Which trends or shifts do you think will shape fashion in 2025/2026?

Personally, I’m not too concerned with following fashion trends. I believe craftsmanship will be a key trend moving forward, and the current shift toward authenticity is here to stay for at least a few years. People are valuing quality and genuine stories behind what they wear more than ever.

What’s one fashion item or piece you dream of owning one day, and why?

Choosing just one favourite piece is honestly impossible, but if I had to pick since I have a deep appreciation for durable, sustainable, and high-quality craftsmanship in fashion, I’d settle on a pair of leather boots.

Name three local designers whose work you admire. What stands out about their approach

Viviers. Studio: Sustainability is deeply integrated in the brand's creative process.

Rich Mnisi: Their designs are truly innovative.

Lukhanyo Mdingi: collaboration with local artisans.

After your studies, how do you envision your career in fashion unfolding? What would your dream project or role look like?

After my studies, I plan to explore and experience all facets of the industry. I don’t want to limit myself to one specific role or area; instead, I want to immerse myself in different aspects to discover what my true passions are. I want to remain open-minded and take on all opportunities that come my way. I’m also interested in possibly going beyond traditional fashion roles—exploring intersections with art, culture, sustainability, and innovation. I want my career to be dynamic and evolving. I hope to build a career that not only satisfies my curiosity and creativity but also allows me to make a meaningful impact in and beyond the fashion world.
