Celebrating Mother's Day with Rushda Moosajee

When you think of Rushda Moosajee, you think of Rushtush, the brand she has built over years of dedication, showing up as her most authentic self, and refusing to do it any other way. Her presence in the pharmaceutical and women's health and wellness space is no overnight success story. It is the result of years of hard work that have made her one of the most loved fitness and wellness voices out there.

If you follow Rush, you also know her as a mother,  fiercely devoted to her four boys. Many of us have watched her evolution over the years, where the constants have been fashion and fitness, and now motherhood too. From the rugby pitch on a Saturday morning, cheering them on in her signature style, to charging around Total Ninja while fielding work calls and still having the time of her life, however she shows up, it's always real.

A look at her Instagram Q&As tells you everything you need to know about how much women are craving honest conversation around motherhood, not the pressure of having it all, but the permission to show up for yourself, again and again, and ask for help along the way.

This Mother's Day, we are honoured to feature Rush. See our Q&A below as she openly shares her thoughts on the balance, the juggle, and the joy of motherhood.

Many women feel pressured to choose between motherhood and their careers. How do you push back against that narrative in your own life and work?

It's a hard reality in the corporate arena; you can never drop the ball, but you can definitely have it all if you build your support community. You can be in the boardroom and at the field side. You might miss drop off and pick up, but a sense of career and financial security can free you up mentally to be the best mum. What drives me up the wall is that we never dare to ask a dad about choosing between a career and fatherhood. Why should women be under this inquisition?

You speak openly about the importance of support. What has asking for help looked like in your journey, and why do you think it's so important for mothers today?

Modern life has changed, things are not as easy and as safe as they used to be. We can no longer rely on our neighbours and even our families to be carers. I'm of the belief that it's my full responsibility to care for my child completely, and relying on others to achieve a goal means we will never get there. I work hard to afford to pay for support. Just because you can do everything doesn't mean you should. In my household, we all play our parts. We are all hardworking.

Your work focuses on strengthening the female body at every stage. How has your understanding of your own body evolved through pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood?

Women's wellness is ever evolving, discovering yourself and adjusting accordingly is the beauty of growth. Disregarding trends and looking inward at what you truly need is crucial to navigating each phase of your life. It's important to know when to drown out the noise.

What does "showing up as your best self" mean to you,  not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, especially as a mother?

It means putting on my life vest first, then my kids. If I'm at my strongest, we can overcome anything as a family. I don't allow my responsibilities as a mother to take away the fun and joy in just enjoying my kids. Prioritising my self-care and wellness is part of this magic.

Many women struggle with guilt when prioritising themselves. What would you say to a mother who feels conflicted about taking time for her own well-being?

It's important to never forget you are your kids' first role model. Rise to the occasion, show them just how much of a badass mama bear you can be.

What are some of the most powerful shifts you've witnessed in women who commit to their health?

Confidence, empowerment, and a sense of self-accomplishment. Happier relationships, marriages, and careers, and an immediate positive outlook.

Outside of fitness and work, what are the small everyday moments of motherhood that you cherish the most?

Cuddling. Sharing a meal or a favourite snack. Being present and on top of my kids. There is nothing better in this world.

What does being a mother mean to you?

It's a huge responsibility, it's my duty to protect and care for my babies, but at the same time teach them how to be respectful, proper men one day. Leaders who don't compromise integrity, who place the women in their lives at the pinnacle, understanding the value of a woman and the importance of standing for something bigger than themselves and adding to society. I work at building their minds every day.
